How to Use a Large Number Calculator: Factorials, Hex, Scientific Notation and 1000-Digit Math

Published

Ordinary calculators and spreadsheets round very large numbers. This guide shows how to get exact results for long numbers with the free Big Number Calculator, and how to read, convert and share the answers.

Why ordinary calculators round large numbers

Most calculators store numbers in floating point, which keeps a limited number of significant digits. Spreadsheet software commonly keeps about 15 significant digits. Beyond that, the remaining digits are lost, and the result is often shown in scientific notation.

This calculator uses exact integer arithmetic. Integer answers keep every digit, and decimal inputs are stored as exact fractions.

1000-digit calculations

Numbers with thousands of digits are well within the input limit of 200,000 significant digits. Calculation time depends on the size of the numbers and your device.

Big number factorial

Select factorial and enter a whole number from 0 to 50,000. The result appears in full with its digit count. Long factorials run in the background and can be cancelled. For counting selections, the combinations and permutations calculators avoid dividing huge factorials by hand.

Hex and other bases

Enter hexadecimal with the prefix 0x, binary with 0b and octal with 0o, for example 0xFF. Integer results can be viewed in decimal, binary, octal or hexadecimal using the result format buttons. Bitwise AND, OR, XOR and shifts accept the same prefixes.

InputBaseDecimal value
0xFF16255
0b1010210
0o17815

Scientific notation input and output

Type values such as 3.5e19 or 1.25e-3. The calculator expands the written value exactly instead of converting it to floating point. A scientific result view is available, rounded to 15 significant digits and labelled as rounded.

Large number calculator without scientific notation

The default result view shows the complete number in plain digits. Scientific notation appears only when you choose that view.

Large number calculator with commas

Turn on the comma option to group digits in threes, such as 1,000,000,000. This makes long results easier to read aloud or check. The words section can also express the value in 19 languages.

Making the calculator larger on screen

This is a web calculator, so you can enlarge it with your browser zoom: press Ctrl and + on Windows or Linux, Command and + on a Mac, or pinch to zoom on a phone or tablet. The layout adapts to the zoom level. Dark mode is available for lower glare.
